Bio: About Rick Burress

He knows your industry. He speaks your language.

As one of the three original Apple-certified consultants nationally, Rick has been a part of the desktop publishing revolution since its inception, in 1987. He was asked by professionals in the print and graphic design communities to rewrite curricula to better meet the actual needs of industry in this evermore digital era. His three new courses helped earn the Scottsdale Community College Graphic Design team the coveted Frederick D. Kagy International Award for Excellence.

Rick helped write the new standards for the State of Arizona's K-12 educational system for Graphic Arts, and each Summer, “teaches the teachers” how to better instruct to those standards.

He has been a copywriter, artist, illustrator, ad agency creative director, television sales rep, marketing director, print salesman, consultant, trainer and author. He currently writes for, consults, and trains many computer sales professionals, artists, advertising agencies, magazine publishers, and Fortune 500 companies, such as Apple Computer, Adobe Systems, Rapp Worldwide, AT&T, and U.S. Airways/American Airlines. He works as a consultant and lecturer, and is an Adjunct Professor at Scottsdale Community College two days a week teaching InDesign, Digital Color Theory, and Digital Photography. Rick regularly consults for major industry leaders such as McMurry Publishing, Arizona Highways Magazine, CI Design, and Healthways.

He has trained the graphic teams of The Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, The Houston Astros, Arizona State University, The Art Institute of Milwaukee, AIGA (the American Institute of Graphic Arts,) and the Printing Industries of Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. He brought many large agencies into the digital era, including Evansgroup/Publicis, and Rapp Worldwide.

He speaks his mind.

He is well respected for his practical approach, impartial opinions, and his affective, humorous way of delivering knowledge in plain English.

He speaks for others.

Rick has served on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and currently serves on the Scottsdale Community College Graphic Arts Occupational Advisory Board. He is the President and Co-Founder of the Arizona Chapter of the Adobe User Group, and is also a board member for the Graphic Communication Education Foundation. In addition to his monthly retainer clients and ad hoc workshops, Rick also teaches “Listening Skills” workshops for small group leaders—most notably the Alpha Organization.
